Earth Day is one of those moments each year that gives us a chance to pause and think about the world around us. A lot is going on in each of our lives every day, but Earth Day is one of the holidays we enjoy making an impact of some kind every year regardless of what is going on in the world around us.
A Quick History of Earth Day
Earth Day began in 1970 in the United States as a way to bring awareness to environmental issues and inspire action.
What started as a national movement has grown into something much bigger.
Today, over 190 countries around the world participate in Earth Day, with millions of people taking part in activities that support cleaner communities, greener spaces, and a healthier planet.
It’s one of the largest global movements focused on protecting the environment.

You don’t need much to make an impact, but having a few basic tools can make things easier and more enjoyable.

1. Get Involved at Work
One great way to celebrate Earth Day is by getting your coworkers involved.
Something as simple as organizing a group to walk around your building, facility, or nearby community and pick up trash can make a noticeable difference.
It doesn’t need to be complicated:
- Pick a time during the workday
- Invite colleagues to join
- Bring gloves and trash bags
- Walk the property or surrounding area
You’ll be surprised how quickly a group can clean up a space.
It’s also nice to weigh the trash afterward. It adds a fun element to the activity and gives everyone a clear picture of the impact you made. Seeing how many pounds of trash your group collected can be pretty astonishing. You can also use that number if your company has a sustainability goal, or even to advertise on social media your achievements!
If your workplace allows it, you can also take it a step further by planting something—flowers, shrubs, or even a tree.
Of course, just make sure you have permission before planting.
2. Celebrate Earth Day at Home
Earth Day doesn’t have to be organized—it can start right outside your own front door.
Around this time of year, many homes end up with extra debris from winter. Wind, snow, and storms can carry trash into yards, ditches, and nearby areas without us even noticing.
Take some time to:
- Walk your yard or neighborhood
- Pick up any trash that has collected
- Clean up outdoor spaces for spring
A Personal Way We’re Getting Involved This Year
This year, we want to do something simple but meaningful with the kids.
We’re planning to take them to one of our favorite local parks and spend some time picking up trash together using grabbers. It’s a place we already enjoy going to, so being able to give back to it in a small way feels like a great opportunity.
The kids always enjoy being outside, and giving them something hands-on to do makes it even better. We’re hoping it not only helps clean up the park but also shows them how small actions can make a difference.
Sometimes it’s not about doing something big—it’s about doing something intentional.

Plant Something New
Spring and Earth Day go hand in hand.
It’s the perfect time to plant something—whether that’s:
- A tree
- Flowers
- Herbs
- Vegetables
Even a small garden or a few pots can make a difference.
There’s something rewarding about planting something and watching it grow over time.
