When most people hear “online school,” they often picture traditional homeschooling—parents teaching every subject, building lesson plans from scratch, and managing everything independently. That’s not what our experience has been.
We enrolled our kids in PA Cyber, an online public charter school that follows the Pennsylvania curriculum and is taught by certified teachers. It combines live virtual classes with self-paced learning, giving structure while still offering flexibility.
Our son follows a full-day schedule, logging into live classes during specific windows alongside other students and teachers. Our daughter, who is in first grade, also attends live classes but has more self-paced lessons that we work through together. She meets with her homeroom teacher every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 1 p.m., creating consistency and connection.
What surprised us most wasn’t just how well it works—it was how much it reduced stress and improved our family rhythm.
The Flexibility Changed Everything
One of the biggest reasons we chose online school was flexibility. Our kids can log in from anywhere. As long as we have internet access—or even a phone hotspot—they’re able to attend class.
This made travel, holidays, and extended stays much easier to plan. It also gave us peace of mind during a year of career changes and uncertainty. If we needed to relocate, their education wouldn’t be disrupted. That stability alone made online school a great fit for our family.
1. Mornings Are Calm Again
The frantic mornings—rushing to find clothes, forcing breakfast, yelling to get out the door—are gone.
Now our kids wake up peacefully, get dressed at home, eat something simple, and log in. Starting the day without stress sets the tone for everything else.
2. Real Computer & Communication Skills
It’s impressive to watch kids adapt to video meetings. They’re learning how to mute and unmute microphones, participate in virtual discussions, and even share screens—skills that mirror the modern workplace.
These are things many adults didn’t learn until much later.
3. Adapting to New Learning Styles
Online teachers are incredibly creative. They use interactive games, group activities, and digital learning tools to keep kids engaged. The format pushes them to experiment with different teaching methods, and it shows.
4. Fewer Sick Days
This year has been one of the worst flu seasons in decades. In the past, our kids were sick multiple times a year.
This year? Much healthier. Avoiding constant exposure during peak cold and flu season has been a huge benefit.
5. Stronger Time Management
Our kids now manage their own logins, assignments, and lesson schedules. They’re learning responsibility earlier—checking what’s due, planning their day, and understanding accountability.
We’ve seen these skills develop faster than they did in a traditional classroom setting.
6. Social Outings Still Happen
Online school doesn’t mean staying home all the time. PA Cyber offers frequent in-person outings—zoos, museums, experiences like Crayola World, and more.
Many of these are excused absences and often cost only around $5 per child. The kids still get social interaction, just in a different format.
7. School Sports Are Still an Option
We were surprised to learn that our kids are still eligible to play sports in their local school district.
Our son stays connected with friends from his previous school, which helped make the transition smoother.
8. One-on-One Time With Teachers
Some homeroom sessions aren’t mandatory. As long as lessons are completed, attendance is flexible.
There have been days when our daughter was the only student logged in—and the teacher spent a full 45 minutes one-on-one with her. That kind of individual attention is hard to replicate in a traditional classroom.
9. Full Control Over Nutrition
Lunch feels better when it’s at home. We have full control over what our kids eat, how much, and when. This has been especially helpful with picky eating and building healthier habits.
10. Built-In Physical Activity
The school provides physical education kits—soccer balls, jump ropes, whiffle ball sets, and more.
The kids genuinely enjoy opening these boxes and finding new ways to stay active.
11. A Safer Learning Environment
Knowing our kids are in a safe setting—away from bullying and other threats—brings peace of mind.
Online school has also been wonderful for inclusivity. Kids with learning differences or physical challenges interact together without judgment, which has been powerful to witness.
Final Thoughts
Online school isn’t the right choice for every family—but for us, it’s been a positive, flexible, and empowering experience.
It reduced stress, increased family time, and gave our kids skills that will serve them well beyond school. Most importantly, it gave us confidence that no matter where life takes us next, their education can move with us.
We’d love to hear from other families—whether you’re considering online school, currently enrolled, or have questions. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

Wow! I think Pennsyvania is really on top of things. I have not heard the same things here in the Midwest. What a positive informative article!
